MeasuringEcclesiastes 4:6

I Found Out What They Do And Started Catching Up

This message is for the parent who learned another family's arrangements and has been trying to match them ever since

It was one conversation and it lasted about eleven minutes.

They were describing their week. Not boasting, just describing, the way people do when somebody asks a friendly question.

And by the end of it you had learned four things about how their household runs, and by the following Tuesday you had started doing two of them.

That was fourteen months ago. You are still doing both, and neither of them fits, and you have never once stopped to ask why you started.

There is a third thing you tried and dropped, and dropping it felt like a small personal failure rather than like the sensible thing it was.

I am not going to tell you what to do instead. That is a standard and this site does not hand those out, and you are already running two arrangements that came from a kitchen you were only in for an hour.

And I am not going to say anything about that family. They answered a question honestly and have no idea any of this happened.

I Found Out What They Do And Started Catching Up

Better is an handful with quietness

There is a line in Ecclesiastes that is unusual because it does arithmetic and comes out on the smaller side.

Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit. (Ecclesiastes 4:6, King James Version)

One handful with quietness. Two handfuls with vexation. And the verse says the one handful is better.

That is not a sentence about being content with less. It is a calculation, and the thing being weighed is not the contents of the hands. It is what comes with them.

You have a handful with quietness available, and it has never once been the losing side of that sum. Ecclesiastes 4:6 says better is an handful with quietness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that into a house that has been running two arrangements for fourteen months.

And look at the word travail. Both the hands full with travail.

Travail is labor, effort, the cost of holding two hands full. The verse is not against the second handful. It is naming what the second handful costs to keep hold of.

You are being shown a price rather than being told to want less, and the verse has never once been about contentment. It is written in Ecclesiastes 4:6 that both hands full come with travail and vexation of spirit, and the Spirit of God is the one who names a cost rather than issuing a limit.

Why the two things do not fit

Now let me say plainly why those two arrangements have never worked in that house, because the conclusion drawn from it is that the fault is at this end.

They were built for a different household. Different number of adults, different hours, different children, different everything, over some length of time that nobody mentioned in that conversation.

You received them as finished items with none of the fitting. That is the whole of it. And a thing that does not fit takes constant effort to hold, which is exactly the travail the verse names.

Ecclesiastes 4:6 weighs the effort rather than the item, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person put down something that was never shaped for their hands.

You are able to put down what was never shaped for this house, and the not fitting has never once been a fault in you. Ecclesiastes 4:6 weighs the effort of holding rather than the value of the thing held, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person set down what came from another kitchen.

And here is the plain thing, because fourteen months has made this into something.

That is not a verdict. It is not a score, it is not a grade, and it is not evidence about how your household is run.

It is a person who heard something useful and tried it, which is a reasonable thing to do, and then kept holding it because dropping it felt like losing.

You have not failed at anybody's arrangements, and keeping a thing that does not fit has never once been faithfulness. The written word does the arithmetic and lands on the handful in Ecclesiastes 4:6, and the Spirit of God is the one who declines to call a sensible dropping a defeat.

Vexation of spirit

One more thing about the last three words, because they are the ones that describe your Tuesdays.

Vexation of spirit. In Ecclesiastes that phrase is usually translated something like chasing wind, and the picture is of effort spent on something that cannot be caught.

That is the specific quality of trying to run somebody else's arrangements. Not exhausting exactly. Unfinished. Always slightly behind, always about to be got right, never actually arriving.

You are chasing something that was never catchable in this house, and the not arriving has never once been a failure of effort. It is written in Ecclesiastes 4:6 that the two full hands come with vexation of spirit, and the Spirit of God is the one who ends a pursuit rather than speeding a tired person up.

And that is not a description of your character. It is a description of what happens when a person tries to hold a shape that was formed somewhere else.

Ecclesiastes 4:6 names that chase and puts it on the losing side of the sum, and the Holy Spirit is the one who stops a person chasing something they were never going to catch.

You are not chasing something because you are inadequate, and a shape formed in another house has never once been catchable in this one. Ecclesiastes 4:6 puts the chasing on the losing side of its own arithmetic, and the Holy Spirit is the one who ends a pursuit rather than speeding a person up.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody tonight.

You are not behind another household, and two arrangements borrowed from an eleven minute conversation have never once been a standard for this house. Ecclesiastes 4:6 does the arithmetic and lands on the handful, and the Spirit of God is the one carrying that into a week that has been carrying somebody else's shape for fourteen months.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have a handful with quietness in front of you, and Scripture itself calls that the better side of the sum. It is written, better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit, and the Holy Spirit is the one who weighs what a thing costs to hold rather than what it looks like held.

A handful. With quietness. Better.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Two arrangements I picked up in somebody else's kitchen, you were never issued to this house. Ecclesiastes 4:6 says better is an handful with quietness, so by the Holy Spirit you do not get another fourteen months, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that other families have worked out something we have not, you are answered tonight. The written word weighs what a thing costs to hold rather than what it looks like, and by the Holy Spirit I stop chasing a shape that was formed in another house.
  3. Father, You call the handful better. Your word says better is an handful with quietness, so by Your Spirit I put the phone down tonight, add nothing, and notice one thing my child did today.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
