I Asked How They Do It And Felt Worse

You asked because you genuinely wanted to know.

Not to compare. You were tired and you thought somebody might say something that would take a bit of weight off, and so you asked how they manage the evenings.

And they told you. Warmly, without a trace of showing off, in a way that made it clear they thought they were being helpful.

And by the time you left you had a list of eleven things you do not do.

You did not go there to be measured. Nobody measured you. But you came home with more than you arrived with, and it is not a good more, and now the evenings have a shape to fall short of that they did not have on Tuesday.

I am not going to give you a better set of things to do. That is a standard and this site does not hand those out, and you already have eleven you did not ask for.

My yoke is easy, and my burden is light

There is a sentence at the end of a famous invitation, and the two adjectives in it are the whole thing.

For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:30, King James Version)

Easy and light. Two words, both about weight and fit, and neither of them about size or completeness.

A yoke is a fitted thing. It was made for a specific animal and a specific shoulder, and a yoke that fits one perfectly will rub another one raw within a mile.

You are under a yoke that was fitted to you, and no arrangement made for somebody else's house has ever once been made for yours. Matthew 11:30 says my yoke is easy, and my burden is light, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that into a car on the way home from somebody else's front room.

And light is the second word, and it is a measurement of what is actually being carried.

The invitation before it is to people who are already worn out and heavy laden. So this is not a promise to people with easy lives. It is a specific offer to swap a heavy load for a light one, said to somebody standing there already carrying too much.

You have a load available that is genuinely light, and it has never once been the same load with better organization. It is written in Matthew 11:30 that the yoke is easy and the burden is light, and the Spirit of God is the one who offers an exchange rather than an improvement.

What actually happened in that front room

Now let me describe the mechanism, because nobody in that room did anything wrong and you still came home worse.

They described what works in their house. Every item on that list is real and every one of them was arrived at over years by that particular family, in response to their particular children and their particular week.

You received eleven finished items with none of the years attached. That is the whole distortion. What took them four years to arrive at came to you in a single afternoon as a set of requirements.

And a finished thing looks effortless, which is why comparing your process to somebody else's outcome always loses.

You were never in a fair comparison, and a finished arrangement has never once shown its own years. It is written in Matthew 11:30 that the yoke is easy because it fits, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person see what was actually being weighed.

Matthew 11:30 gives a fit rather than a set of practices, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes eleven items off a person who never agreed to carry them.

You are not obliged to carry eleven things you did not agree to, and none of them has ever once been fitted to this house. Matthew 11:30 makes the yoke a fitted thing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes off what somebody else's shoulders were shaped for.

And here is the plain thing, because the drive home turned it into something about you.

That is not a verdict. It is not a score, it is not a grade, and it is not evidence about the parent sitting in that car.

It is a person who asked an honest question and got an honest answer, and the arithmetic that happened afterwards was done by nobody, silently, in a car.

You have not been shown up by anybody's evenings, and eleven things you do not do has never once been a report on you. The written word measures a yoke by fit rather than by contents in Matthew 11:30, and the Spirit of God is the one who declines to score one household against another.

Heavy laden is the qualification

One more thing, because the verse before it matters and most people quote this one on its own.

The invitation is to everybody who is worn out and heavy laden. That is the entry requirement, and it is the only one, and it is met by being tired.

Which means the state a person is in when they ask is not something to fix before coming. It is the qualification.

You are already carrying the only ticket that was ever required, and being worn out has never once been a thing to sort out first. It is written in Matthew 11:30 that the yoke is easy and the burden light, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes the tired exactly as they arrive.

You do not need to arrive with your evenings sorted out. Being worn down is the ticket, and that is written into the sentence before the easy yoke is ever mentioned.
