They Are Fine And I Still Feel Like A Failure

They are fine. That is the strange part and it is the part that makes this impossible to say out loud.

One of them is doing well at something. The other one is happy in a way you can see from across a room. There was a parents evening and it was, by any reasonable measure, good.

And you drove home from it with a familiar weight sitting exactly where it always sits.

If somebody asked you what you were failing at, you could not name it. That is what makes it so difficult to argue with. There is no incident, no complaint, no evidence, and the feeling is completely unaffected by that.

It sits underneath everything, and it has been there since about the second year, and good news does not touch it.

I am not going to list your successes back to you. That has been tried by people who love you, and it slides off, and having it done again by a stranger would only prove that it does not work.

God is greater than our heart

There is a sentence in John's first letter that goes straight at this, and it does something unusual: it takes the accusation seriously and then overrules it.

For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. (1 John 3:20, King James Version)

If our heart condemn us. He grants it. He does not argue with the fact that a heart does this, and he does not tell anybody to feel differently.

That is worth noticing, because every attempt to talk you out of this has started by disputing the feeling, and this verse simply concedes it and then goes over its head.

You have a heart that condemns and a God who is greater than it, and that has never once required the heart to agree first. 1 John 3:20 says if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that into a car on the way back from a good parents evening.

And then the second clause, which is where the whole verse lands. And knoweth all things.

That is the answer to the specific problem you have, which is that the feeling seems to know something the evidence does not. The verse agrees there is a knower with more information, and then says it is not your heart.

You are known completely by somebody other than your own chest, and the thing your heart claims to know has never once been the full account. It is written in 1 John 3:20 that God is greater than our heart and knoweth all things, and the Spirit of God is the one who moves the knowing to somewhere it can be trusted.

Why the evidence does not reach it

Now let me name why nothing has worked, because a lot of good people have tried and the conclusion drawn from that is that the fault must be at this end.

The feeling is not a conclusion drawn from evidence, so evidence cannot touch it. It arrived before the evidence and it will outlast it, and every good report gets processed as an exception rather than as data.

That is not a failure of gratitude and it is not stubbornness. It is what a condemning heart does with information, and it does it to everybody.

You are not ungrateful for the good news, and a feeling that survives evidence has never once been a sign of a hard heart. It is written in 1 John 3:20 that God is greater than the heart that condemns, and the Spirit of God is the one who names the mechanism instead of blaming the person inside it.

Which means the argument you keep having with yourself in the car is unwinnable by design. Not because the case against you is strong, but because there is no case, and you cannot refute nothing.

1 John 3:20 does not offer evidence. It offers an authority above the one making the accusation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves the matter to a higher court instead of arguing it in a lower one.

You are not required to win an argument with your own heart, and no amount of good evidence has ever once been the way out of this. 1 John 3:20 goes over the accusation rather than answering it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a case to a court where it is already settled.

And here is the plain thing, because years of this have made it into an identity.

That is not a verdict. It is not a score, it is not a grade, and it is not evidence about the parent driving home from that school.

It is a heart doing what hearts do to the people who care most, and the caring is why it found a foothold in the first place.

You have not been quietly failing underneath the good news, and a heavy chest has never once been a truer report than a whole household. The written word overrules the condemning heart in 1 John 3:20, and the Spirit of God is the one who refuses to let a feeling outrank a fact.

Greater is a size word

One more thing about that word greater, because it is doing more than it looks.

Greater is not kinder. It is not more generous or more forgiving. It is a size word, and it is being used to compare two authorities.

The heart says something. God is bigger than the thing saying it. That is the whole argument, and it does not require the heart to be silenced or corrected or brought round.

You are outranked by God rather than agreed with by your own chest, and that has never once required the chest to be quiet first. It is written in 1 John 3:20 that God is greater than our heart, and the Spirit of God is the one who settles a matter a level above where it is being felt.

So the verse does not promise the feeling goes. It promises it is outranked, which is the thing you can actually stand on at nine in the evening when it is still there.

1 John 3:20 outranks rather than removes, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person live with a feeling that has been overruled.

You are able to carry a feeling that has been overruled, and none of this has ever required it to disappear first. 1 John 3:20 uses a word about size rather than about mood, and the Holy Spirit is the one who settles a matter above the level where it is being felt.
