A Family I Will Never Meet

It was about four hundred words about a family in another country.

Nothing dramatic. Something ordinary about how their week goes, written warmly by somebody who has no idea you exist and who will never know you read it.

And you were fine before you read it, and about six minutes afterwards something had gone cold in your chest, and it stayed there through the evening and it was still faintly there in the morning.

That is the part that is difficult to say. Not that you compared yourself to strangers. That everybody does. It is that four hundred words about people you will never meet were able to reach into an ordinary Tuesday and take the temperature down.

I am not going to warn you about screens. That is a lecture about a culture and this page is not one, and you have heard it and it has never once changed a single evening.

And I am not going to say anything about that family. They were being honest about their own week and they meant no harm to anybody.

A sound heart is the life of the flesh

There is a proverb about what a heart does to a body, and the first half is where the good news is.

A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones. (Proverbs 14:30, King James Version)

A sound heart is the life of the flesh.

Sound there is a structural word. It means whole, undivided, not split into pieces pulling in different directions, and the proverb says that a heart in that condition supplies life to the whole body.

You are able to have a heart that is whole, and it has never once been a thing you had to manufacture yourself. Proverbs 14:30 says a sound heart is the life of the flesh, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that into an evening that went cold six minutes after a screen.

And the second half is not a rebuke aimed at you. It is a physical observation.

The rottenness of the bones is a description of a cost, not an accusation. The writer is saying what a divided heart does inside a body, the way you would say that a certain job wears out a back.

You are being told what something costs rather than being scolded for it, and the verse has never once been an accusation. It is written in Proverbs 14:30 that envy is the rottenness of the bones, and the Spirit of God is the one who names a cost without handing out blame.

Why strangers reach further than neighbors

Now let me name something specific, because there is a reason four hundred words from another country landed harder than a whole evening at a neighbor's house would have.

A neighbor is a person. A neighbor has been seen tired. There is something known about their week, and any comparison with them comes pre-loaded with context that softens it.

A family in four hundred words has no context at all. There is nothing about them except the good part, because the good part is what got written down, and there is no bad Tuesday available anywhere in the text.

You are not losing to a household, and a description has never once had a bad Tuesday in it by construction. It is written in Proverbs 14:30 that a sound heart is the life of the flesh, and the Spirit of God is the one who names what is actually on the other side of a comparison.

So the comparison is not between your household and theirs. It is between your household and a description, and a description has no bad days in it by construction.

And here is the plain thing, because a cold evening turned into something about you.

That is not a verdict. It is not a score, it is not a grade, and it is not evidence about your household or about how you spend an evening.

It is a person who read something and had a normal human response to it, and the response lasted about fourteen hours and cost you a Tuesday.

You have not been shown up by strangers, and four hundred words have never once been a survey of your family. The written word describes the cost of a divided heart in Proverbs 14:30, and the Spirit of God is the one who declines to treat a cold evening as a finding.

Sound is the opposite of divided

One more thing, because the word sound tells you what the answer is and it is not what most people expect.

The opposite of a sound heart in that proverb is not a bad heart. It is a divided one. Two things being wanted at once, or one heart standing in two places at the same time.

And that is exactly what happened at six minutes past. Half of a person was in their own house and half was in a description of somebody else's, and nobody can stand in two houses without something coming apart.

You are being asked for wholeness rather than for a rule about anything, and coming back has never once required a resolution to be made. Coming back to one place is the whole of the answer, and it does not require anybody to be criticized or any resolution to be made.
