I Scrolled Once And Lost The Evening

It was four seconds. Maybe six.

You were not even looking for anything. The phone was in your hand for a reason that had nothing to do with anybody, and something went past, and you saw it, and you put the phone down.

And then the evening was different.

Not ruined. Nobody would have noticed. You did everything you were going to do, and you did it slightly further away, from about eighteen inches behind your own eyes, and the whole thing went past you in a way that Tuesday evenings mostly do not.

And at ten o'clock you could not have described a single thing that had actually happened in the room.

I am not going to give you a rule about the phone. That is a system and this is not a place that hands those out, and you have made four of them yourself already and kept none.

And I am not going to lecture you about a culture. Everybody has heard that lecture and nobody's evening has ever been given back by one.

The light of the body is the eye

There is a sentence in Matthew that is about attention, and it is much more physical than people expect.

The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. (Matthew 6:22, King James Version)

The light of the body is the eye. Whatever the eye is doing determines what fills the rest of a person.

That is not a moral statement about looking at bad things. It is a mechanical one. The eye is described as the aperture, and what comes in through it fills up whatever is behind it.

You have an eye that fills the whole of you, and it has never once been a small or a private thing. Matthew 6:22 says the light of the body is the eye, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that into a living room where four seconds took an evening.

And then the word single. If thine eye be single.

Single there means undivided, aimed at one thing, not scattered across two. It is the same idea as an eye that has one focal point rather than one that is trying to hold two images at once.

You are offered a single eye rather than a stricter one, and none of that has ever once been a rule about what you may look at. It is written in Matthew 6:22 that if thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light, and the Spirit of God is the one who gathers an aperture rather than closing it.

What actually left the room

Now let me name what happened at four seconds past, because it is not guilt and it is not weakness.

An image came in, and it stayed. Not as a thought being had on purpose, but as a second room running quietly behind the first one, and from that moment there were two places.

And the evening did not get worse. It got thinner, because half the attention that belonged in that room was somewhere else, being spent on people whose evening nobody in your house was in.

That is not a moral failure. It is a division, and the verse names division as the thing that dims a body rather than naming any particular sin.

You are dealing with a division rather than a fault, and the verse has never once put the blame on what anybody happened to see. It is written in Matthew 6:22 that the eye is the light of the body, and the Spirit of God is the one who names a mechanism rather than issuing a restriction.

And here is the plain thing, because a thin evening has turned into something about you.

That is not a verdict. It is not a score, it is not a grade, and it is not evidence about how present a parent is in this house.

It is an aperture that took in a second room and could not immediately close it, which is what apertures do.

You have not been absent from your own evening, and eighteen inches behind your own eyes has never once been the same as leaving. The written word makes the eye the aperture in Matthew 6:22 rather than a moral organ, and the Spirit of God is the one who declines to grade a person on four seconds.

Full of light is not a thing you produce

One more thing, and it is the part that takes the weight off tomorrow.

Thy whole body shall be full of light. Look at who is doing the filling.

Not the person. The light comes in, and it fills, and the only thing described on the human side is where the eye is pointing. Nobody in that verse is generating anything.

You are not the source of the light in that room, and no part of the filling has ever once been assigned to you. It is written in Matthew 6:22 that the whole body shall be full of light, and the Spirit of God is the one who does the filling in a house where somebody is out of supply by eight.

That matters because the instinct after an evening like yours is to try harder tomorrow, and trying harder is the one thing the verse never mentions.

Matthew 6:22 has a person aiming and God filling, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the filling in a room where somebody has simply put a phone face down.

You are filled rather than required to produce anything, and the only human part has ever once been where the eye is pointed. Matthew 6:22 says the whole body shall be full of light, and the Holy Spirit is the one who fills a room rather than asking a tired person to.
