I Left The Party Feeling Inspected

Two hours in somebody else's house and you came out of it with a list.

Nobody said anything. That is worth being clear about at the start. Nobody made a remark, nobody looked at anything, and the host was warm the entire time and meant it.

But somewhere around the twenty minute mark you started scanning. Not on purpose. It just began, the way it always does, and by the time the cake came out you had noticed about nine things and every one of them was a small verdict.

The way their children spoke to them. The thing on the wall. How relaxed the whole thing was in a way yours has never once been.

And you got in the car with a feeling that you had failed something, and nobody had set an exam, and there was no invigilator anywhere in that house.

I am not going to say anything about that family. I have not met them and this is not a place where somebody else's household gets taken down to make a reader feel better.

Let every man prove his own work

There is a verse in Galatians that names the exact activity that was going on in that kitchen and then removes it.

But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. (Galatians 6:4, King James Version)

Prove his own work. Prove there is an assay word, the way you would test metal to see what it actually is.

And the word own is doing the load bearing. Not his neighbor's work alongside his own. His own, on its own terms, with no second sample in the room.

You are asked to look at your own work only, and no second household has ever once been part of the test. Galatians 6:4 says let every man prove his own work, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that into a car on the way home from a birthday party.

And then the part almost nobody quotes. Then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.

Rejoicing in himself alone is not pride and it is not smugness. It means the gladness a person can have about their own life without needing anybody else's life to be a certain way for it to work.

You have rejoicing available that does not depend on anybody else's house, and it has never once required a comparison to hold. It is written in Galatians 6:4 that the rejoicing is in himself alone, and not in another, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates gladness from ranking.

The scanning is not judgment, it is a search

Now let me name what the scanning actually is, because it feels like envy and it is not quite that.

It is a search for information. A parent with no reliable way of knowing how they are doing walks into a house with data in it and starts collecting, because information is what a person reaches for when they have been uncertain for years.

That is not a character fault. It is what any of us does when we lack a measure and are handed a sample.

You are short of a measure rather than short of goodwill, and looking for one has never once been a sin. It is written in Galatians 6:4 that a person proves their own work, and the Spirit of God is the one who supplies the missing measure rather than scolding the search for it.

The trouble is that the sample is useless. Two hours of a party is a curated surface, and it contains no information at all about the Tuesdays, and everybody knows that and nobody can feel it at the time.

Galatians 6:4 removes the comparison as a method rather than as a moral failing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes an unreliable instrument out of somebody's hand.

You are not being envious, and reaching for a measure has never once been the same as coveting anybody's life. Galatians 6:4 sends a person to their own work rather than rebuking them for looking sideways, and the Holy Spirit is the one who removes an instrument rather than accusing the person holding it.

And here is the plain thing, because the drive home turned into something bigger.

That is not a verdict. It is not a score, it is not a grade, and it is not evidence about your household.

It is a person collecting samples from a surface, and the surface was two hours long and had cake on it.

You have not been failed by anybody, and nine things noticed at a party have never once amounted to a finding. The written word puts the proving on a person's own work in Galatians 6:4, and the Spirit of God is the one who declines to accept a verdict made in somebody else's kitchen.

What proving your own work actually looks like

One more thing, because the verse tells you to do something and it is worth being accurate about what.

Prove your own work does not mean look harder at yourself. It is not an instruction to grade in private what was being graded in public.

It means look at what is actually in front of you, on its own terms, without a second sample. The child in your house. The week you actually had. The thing that went well on Thursday that nobody saw.

You have work worth looking at on its own terms, and none of it has ever once needed a second household beside it to count. It is written in Galatians 6:4 that a person proves his own work, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an ordinary Thursday visible again.

That is not an exam and it does not produce a mark. It produces the rejoicing the verse mentions, which is the point of the whole exercise.

You are being pointed toward noticing rather than grading, and there has never once been a mark at the end of it. Galatians 6:4 finishes with rejoicing rather than with a mark, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a scan into a look.
