They Have A Life I Am Not In

Somebody mentioned a name and you did not know who it was.

Not a stranger. Somebody your child sees regularly, apparently, and has for months, and the way it came up made it clear that this was not a secret and had simply never come up.

And you said something normal and the conversation moved on.

But there was about a second where you understood, properly, for the first time, that there is a whole life going on that you know almost nothing about. Names, conversations, jokes, a version of your own child that other people see and you do not.

It is not that anything is being hidden. That would be simpler and you would know what to do with it.

I am not going to tell you how to stay involved. That is a technique and this site does not hand those out, and the ones people suggest mostly amount to asking more questions.

And I am not going to tell you it is a good sign. It may well be. That is not what you needed at nine in the evening.

I will guide thee with mine eye

There is a line in Psalm 32 about guidance, and the method described in it is unusual and worth stopping on.

I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. (Psalm 32:8, King James Version)

With mine eye.

Not with a hand on a shoulder. Not by walking in front, and not by giving a set of instructions to be carried. Guidance by look, which requires a distance and works across one.

You have a child being guided by a look across a distance, and that method has never once required anybody else to be standing beside them. Psalm 32:8 says I will guide thee with mine eye, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that into a front room where a name came up that meant nothing to you.

And a look works in places a hand cannot reach.

That is the specific quality of it. A hand on a shoulder needs contact. An eye works across a room, across a street, across a whole life that somebody else knows nothing about.

You are looking at a form of guidance built for distance, and no part of it has ever once needed access. It is written in Psalm 32:8 that the guiding is done with an eye, and the Spirit of God is the one whose look reaches into rooms nobody in your house has been in.

What the second was actually about

Now let me name the second in the front room, because it was not about the name.

It was the arithmetic that ran underneath it. If there is one name you do not know, there are others. And if there are others, then the proportion of that life you can see has been dropping for some time without anybody telling you.

That arithmetic is accurate, and it is also not new. It has been true for years and the only thing that happened this evening is that the figure became visible.

You are seeing something rather than losing something, and no evening has ever once taken away what a name in a conversation revealed. It is written in Psalm 32:8 that the guiding is done by eye, and the Spirit of God is the one who is already in the part of a life nobody described to you.

That is not a loss. Seeing something that was already the case is not the same as it happening, although it feels identical from the inside on the night it occurs.

Psalm 32:8 has guidance running through a whole life including the unseen parts, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in the rooms a parent will never be in.

You have not lost access this evening, and seeing a thing that was already true has never once been the same as it happening. Psalm 32:8 guides across distance rather than through proximity, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is already in the rooms nobody told you about.

And here is the plain thing, because that second has become something.

That is not a verdict. It is not a score, it is not a grade, and it is not evidence of a child lost or a parent shut out.

It is a person becoming a person, and it involves a great deal of ordinary life that nobody thinks to mention because it is ordinary.

You have not been shut out of anything, and a name you did not recognize has never once been a door closing. The written word runs its guidance by eye across a distance in Psalm 32:8, and the Spirit of God is the one who declines to read an ordinary unmentioned life as a secret one.

Instruct and teach and guide

One more thing, because there are three verbs in that verse and they are in an order.

Instruct thee, and teach thee, and then guide thee with mine eye.

Instruction and teaching are close work. They need proximity and they happen early, and they are the part that involves a great deal of talking.

Guidance by eye is the third one and it is what the first two are for. It works when the other two are finished, and it is the mode that operates at a distance, and it is described last on purpose.

You have arrived at the mode the earlier ones were building toward, and none of that earlier work has ever once been wasted. It is written in Psalm 32:8 that the instructing and the teaching come before the guiding, and the Spirit of God is the one who moves a relationship through all three without dropping anything.

Psalm 32:8 puts the eye at the end of a sequence rather than at the start of one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves through those three without anybody losing anything in the transitions.

You are in the third part of a sequence rather than at the end of something, and none of the earlier work has ever once been lost in the change. Psalm 32:8 lists instruction and teaching before the guiding by eye, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a relationship through those without dropping anything.
