Letting GoIsaiah 46:4

They Asked To Do It Alone

This message is for the parent who felt a child's request for independence as a rejection and cannot say that out loud

They said they would rather do it on their own.

Kindly. There was no edge on it and it was not a rebuke, and they probably thought they were being considerate about your time.

And it landed as a rejection. Not a small one either. It went into you in a way that was completely out of proportion to a sentence about a task.

You said something warm and appropriate and then went and did something in another room for about ten minutes.

And you cannot say any of this out loud, because the sentence is: my child wanting to do something without me hurt my feelings, and that sentence sounds like a person who should be ashamed of themselves.

I am not going to tell you that you are still needed. That is a reassurance and you would hear it as one, and it would last about four hours.

And I am not going to tell you what it means about the stage they are at. That is a readiness marker and this site does not hand those out.

They Asked To Do It Alone

Even to your old age I am he

There is a sentence in Isaiah spoken about a whole lifetime, and the shape of it is what makes it useful.

And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you. (Isaiah 46:4, King James Version)

Even to your old age I am he.

The verse is answering an unstated fear, which is that being carried is a thing for the early part of a life and gets withdrawn once a person can manage.

And it says the opposite. The carrying runs to the far end. It does not stop at competence and it does not stop at hoar hairs, which is the whitest hair a person gets.

You are carried at every age including this one, and the carrying has never once been withdrawn from anybody who learned to manage. Isaiah 46:4 says even to your old age I am he, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that into a kitchen ten minutes after a kind sentence landed badly.

And notice the verbs stacked at the end. I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.

Four of them, all describing the same direction of travel, all done by the same person, none of them handed over to the one being carried at any point in the sequence.

You have four verbs running over you and not one of them has ever once been reassigned. It is written in Isaiah 46:4 that He made, bears, carries and delivers, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps every one of those on His own side of the sentence.

What it landed as, and why

Now let me name the disproportion, because that is the part that has been impossible to explain to anybody.

A sentence about a task landed as a sentence about a relationship. That is what happened, and it happened in about half a second, and no amount of knowing better afterwards has been able to undo it.

You are not overreacting, and half a second of that landing has never once been a thing anybody could have talked themselves out of. It is written in Isaiah 46:4 that the carrying goes to old age, and the Spirit of God is the one who meets a person in the half second rather than in the explanation afterwards.

It landed that way because for a very long time being needed and being loved arrived in the same envelope. Every single day, for years, they came together, and nobody ever separated them because there was no reason to. They have traveled as one thing for a decade.

And now one of them is arriving on its own and the other one is not, and the nervous system reads that as loss because it has no other category for it.

Isaiah 46:4 has the carrying continuing when the need has changed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates two things that have traveled together for a decade.

You are not being rejected, and a change in what somebody needs has never once been a change in what somebody feels. Isaiah 46:4 keeps the carrying going long past the point of managing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates being needed from being loved.

And here is the plain thing, because ten minutes in another room has become something.

That is not a verdict. It is not a score, it is not a grade, and it is not evidence of somebody who cannot let go.

It is a body reading a new arrangement with an old instrument, which is what happens to everybody the first few times.

You have not been shown to be a person who cannot let go, and a sentence landing badly has never once been a report on your character. The written word carries a person to the end of their life in Isaiah 46:4, and the Spirit of God is the one who refuses to read half a second of hurt as a fault.

Nothing here says you are needed less

One straight thing, because there is a version of this article that would be a lie.

I am not going to tell you the need has not changed. It has, and everybody knows it has, and pretending otherwise is the thing that makes these conversations unbearable.

What has not changed is anything about the relationship. That is a separate fact and it does not move when the first one does, and the whole of Isaiah 46:4 is about something that does not stop when the circumstances change.

The two of them have been arriving together for so long that separating them takes time, and there is no exercise for it.

You are not required to do the separating yourself, and no amount of understanding it has ever once been the thing that does it. It is written in Isaiah 46:4 that the carrying runs to hoar hairs, and the Spirit of God is the one who holds a relationship steady while a need is moving underneath it.

Isaiah 46:4 keeps its carrying constant across a whole lifetime of changing circumstances, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds a relationship steady while a need is moving.

You are held steady while something else is moving, and no change in circumstances has ever once moved the other thing. Isaiah 46:4 runs its carrying from the beginning of a life to the very end of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps the constant thing constant.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody tonight.

You are not being left, and a kind sentence about a task has never once been a sentence about a relationship. Isaiah 46:4 answers the fear that being carried gets withdrawn once a person can manage, and the Spirit of God is the one carrying that into a hall where somebody stood for ninety seconds.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are carried to the very end of your own life, and not one of the four verbs in that verse has ever once been handed over to you. It is written, even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps every part of the carrying on His own side.

Even to old age. Even to hoar hairs. Still carried.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Sentence about a task that landed wrong, you are not what you felt like. Isaiah 46:4 says even to your old age I am he, so by the Holy Spirit you do not get to be read as a rejection, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that being needed less means being loved less, you are answered tonight. The written word carries a person long past the point where they can manage, and by the Holy Spirit I stop reading a change in need as a change in anything else.
  3. Father, even to hoar hairs You carry. Your word says I have made, and I will bear, so by Your Spirit I let one thing happen without me today and I stay in the other room.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
