Letting GoPsalm 127:4

They Are Old Enough And I Cannot Let Them

This message is for the parent who knows their child can do it alone and cannot make themselves stay out of it

You did it again on Saturday and you saw yourself doing it.

They were most of the way through it. It was going to be fine. It was going to be slightly wrong and entirely fine, and your hands arrived before your thinking did, and it was finished in nine seconds and everybody moved on and nobody said anything.

And you stood there afterwards knowing exactly what had happened.

This is the last article on this site, and it will not do the three things these articles usually do.

It will not tell you at what age. There is no age. There is no stage, no marker, no list of signs that a child is ready, and anybody publishing one is describing their own household and calling it a principle.

It will not treat this as a loss for you to grieve. Something is not ending.

And it will not treat it as a graduation either, with a moment and a feeling and a photograph. Nothing is being marked.

What is actually happening is much smaller and more ordinary: a hand opening slightly, on a Tuesday, in a house.

They Are Old Enough And I Cannot Let Them

As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man

There is a picture in Psalm 127 for children that people quote warmly without noticing what the object in it is actually for.

As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them. (Psalm 127:4-5, King James Version)

As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man.

An arrow held in a hand is not doing anything. It is not an arrow yet, functionally; it is a straight piece of wood being carried. The entire design of the object is about the moment it is not held.

And the psalm chooses that image deliberately over a dozen warmer ones it could have used. Not a treasure, not a garden, not something kept. A thing whose whole purpose is release, held by somebody strong enough to let go accurately.

That does not make the holding wrong. Holding is half of it and it is the half you have been doing well. But the picture has the opening of the hand built into it from the beginning, and it is not framed as a sadness anywhere.

Psalm 127:4 chooses an object designed to be released rather than one designed to be kept, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that reach a parent who has been reading letting go as a loss.

You are holding something built to be released, and the opening of your hand has never once been a loss. Psalm 127:4 says as arrows are in the hand of a mighty man, choosing an object whose purpose is the release, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the grief out of a hand opening.

Stepping in is not helping

Now the thing you already half know, said plainly.

When you finish it for them, the job gets done and something else does not happen. They do not find out what happens when it goes slightly wrong, and they do not get the ordinary information that they can survive a small mess, and that information cannot be given verbally.

And there is a second thing, quieter. A child who is regularly finished for concludes, without any words, that they are somebody who needs finishing for. That is not a wound and it is not damage. It is just a small belief that forms and then gets carried around.

You have been handing over a belief along with the finished job, and none of it has ever once been said out loud to anybody. Psalm 127:4 pictures a hand whose strength shows in the opening of it, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a silent transaction visible to the person making it.

Psalm 127:4 has a strong hand releasing rather than gripping, and the Holy Spirit is not asking anybody to supervise this closely.

You are not stepping in because you doubt them. You are stepping in because it is faster and because your hands are trained. Both of those are true and neither is a reason.

You are able to stay out of it, and stepping in has never once been the same as helping. The written word pictures a hand whose strength is expressed in the release, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates a trained reflex from an actual necessity.

One thing, and stay in the other room

So here is the assignment, and it is the last one on this site, and the second half is what makes it real.

Let them do one thing today without stepping in. And stay in the other room.

The other room is the whole assignment. Because you cannot watch this. If you are standing there you will do the thing with your face, or make the small sound, or say the word that is not quite an instruction, and they will read every one of those instantly and the exercise is over. Psalm 127:4 has the arrow leave the hand entirely, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a parent from supervising a release.

So pick something ordinary and small and reversible, and then be somewhere else while it happens.

And when it comes out slightly wrong, which it will, say nothing about the wrong part. Not one comment, not a helpful note for next time, not a kind correction. Say thanks and move on.

Because the thing they need to learn today is not how to do it properly. It is that they did it, and that the sky held, and that nobody came in.

You are able to let a thing come out slightly wrong and say nothing at all about the wrong part, and that silence has never once been neglect. Psalm 127:4 has the arrow leaving the hand completely, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a parent who says thanks and moves on.

Psalm 127:4 has the release performed by strength rather than by anxiety, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a parent in a different room for four minutes.

You are able to be elsewhere while it happens, and it has never once needed your hands to have gone well. Psalm 127:4 puts the arrow in a hand that is strong enough to open, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with somebody standing in a kitchen deliberately not going in.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody today, and it is the last thing this site has to say.

You are not abandoning anybody, and staying in the other room has never once been the same as stepping away. I am not going to give you an age or a stage or a readiness marker, because there is not one. Psalm 127:4 chooses an object whose whole design is the release, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who takes the grief out of a hand opening slightly.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are strong enough to open your hand, and the strength has always been in the release rather than in the grip. The written word says as arrows are in the hand of a mighty man, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a parent deliberately being somewhere else.

One thing. And stay out of the room.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Reflex that gets my hands there before my thinking does, you are not help and you never were. Psalm 127:4 says as arrows are in the hand of a mighty man, so by the Holy Spirit you do not finish another job for them in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that staying out of the room is the same as stepping away, you have no ground. The word chose an object whose entire design is the release and never once framed it as a sadness, and by the Holy Spirit I am done reading an open hand as a loss.
  3. Father, You picked the arrow and not the treasure. Your word says as arrows are in the hand of a mighty man, so by Your Spirit I let them do one thing today, and I stay in the other room while they do it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
