Something is happening this week. A conversation that needs having, or a thing at school, or a decision that has to be made by Friday.
And somewhere in the last few days it has stopped being a week and started being a hinge.
You are handling it as though the whole of the next twenty years turns on it. As though there is a correct move, and if you find it a certain kind of adult comes out at the other end, and if you miss it something else does.
That is why you cannot sleep about it, and it is also why every ordinary interaction this week has felt like it is being recorded.
I am not going to tell you the right way to handle it. That is a standard and this site does not hand those out, and being handed one when a week already feels like a hinge would only raise the stakes further.
And I am not going to tell you it does not matter. It might matter. Some weeks do. The trouble is not that it matters, it is the size you have given it.

In thy book all my members were written
There is a verse at the middle of Psalm 139 about a life being written down before it started.
Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. (Psalm 139:16, King James Version)
Written, when as yet there was none of them.
The writing happened first. Before the substance, before any of the days, before anybody had made any decisions at all about anything.
That is not a statement about a fixed future. It is a statement about who has been holding the whole shape of a life, and about when He started.
You are living inside something already written by God, and none of it has ever been waiting on you to get a week right. Psalm 139:16 says in thy book all my members were written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that into a house where somebody has turned Thursday into a hinge.
And notice the phrase before it. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect.
Unperfect means unfinished. God is described as looking at something not yet complete without alarm, which is a picture of exactly the situation you are in with a child this week.
You are watched over by somebody who is not alarmed by an unfinished person, and He has never once been in a hurry about it. It is written in Psalm 139:16 that His eyes saw the substance while it was yet unperfect, and the Spirit of God is the one who looks at a work in progress without panic.
The hinge is a trick of proximity
Now let me name what has happened to the size of this week, because it is a distortion and not a discovery.
Things that are close look big. That is true of objects and it is true of weeks. The one a person is inside occupies the whole windscreen, and next March is a dot, and both of those are illusions of position rather than facts about size.
Ask any parent of grown children which week decided anything and watch them fail to answer. They will name something, but it will be a season, or a person, or a slow thing that took years, and almost never a Thursday.
Psalm 139:16 has the whole of it written in continuance rather than at a decisive point, and the Holy Spirit is the one who restores the proportions of a week that had swollen.
You are not standing at a hinge, and the size of this week has never once been a measurement. Psalm 139:16 has a life written in continuance rather than turned on a single day, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a Thursday back its actual dimensions.
And here is the plain thing, because a week of this has become something about you.
That is not a verdict. It is not a score, it is not a grade, and it is not evidence about the parent walking that ridge.
It is a person who cares a very great deal, standing too close to something, which is what caring does to distance.
You have not been given a week that decides everything, and the weight on it has never come from God. The written word puts the writing before the days in Psalm 139:16, and the Spirit of God is the one who declines to make a household's future rest on one Friday.
What the pressure is doing to the week itself
One more thing, and this is the part that will actually change something.
A week being handled as a hinge is handled badly. Not because the parent is incompetent, but because pressure makes people rigid, and rigidity is the one thing that guarantees a conversation goes wrong.
The child can feel it too. They cannot name it, but they know when a Thursday has stakes attached, and they get careful in return, and careful is the enemy of everything being hoped for.
So the size you have given it is not neutral. It is actively working against the outcome you want.
Psalm 139:16 lifts the weight off the week rather than helping a person carry it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ordinary Thursday possible again.
You are able to handle this week as a week, and doing that has never once meant treating it carelessly. Psalm 139:16 has the whole life written before any of the days arrived, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the stakes off a conversation so it can actually happen.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody tonight.
You are not holding the next twenty years in a Thursday, and the weight on this week has never once been assigned to you by God. Psalm 139:16 has the substance seen while unfinished and the days written before any of them arrived, and the Spirit of God is the one carrying that into a house where a week turned into a hinge.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have a child whose days were written before one of them came, and no week of yours has ever been the thing holding that together. It is written, in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a hinge back down to a Thursday.
Written first. In continuance. Not on Friday.
Declare this over yourself
- Week that has turned itself into a hinge, you are a week and nothing more. Psalm 139:16 says in thy book all my members were written, so by the Holy Spirit you do not get the next twenty years, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that one conversation decides what kind of adult comes out at the end, you are answered. The written word has the days written in continuance rather than turned on a single one, and by the Holy Spirit I stop reading proximity as size.
- Father, You wrote the days before there were any of them. Your word says when as yet there was none of them, so by Your Spirit I write my one thing down tonight and I put it in a drawer.
