I Said Something Cold And Precise

You did not shout. That is the part that has been quietly making this worse all day.

If you had shouted you would have a category for it. People shout. There is a whole vocabulary for losing it, and everybody you know has one of those stories.

What you did was worse and quieter. You said one sentence, in an even voice, and it was accurate. You picked the exact thing. You knew where it would land because you know that person better than anybody alive, and you said it anyway.

And then you watched it land, and their face did a thing, and the conversation carried on.

That was eleven hours ago. You have carried it around all day like something in a coat pocket.

I am not going to give you a way to catch yourself next time. That is a technique and this is not a place that hands those out. And I am not going to tell you it was not that bad, because you know exactly how bad it was, and you would stop reading.

Piercings of a sword

There is a proverb that names this precisely, and the strange comfort in it is that somebody wrote it down three thousand years ago.

There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health. (Proverbs 12:18, King James Version)

Piercings of a sword. Not a blunt thing. A sword goes in at one point, deliberately, and the damage is not spread out.

That is the sentence you said. Not a shout, which is a blunt instrument and mostly noise. A point, put in a specific place, with knowledge behind it.

You are not the first person to have a mouth that can do that, and the Scriptures named it long before anybody was watching you. Proverbs 12:18 says there is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that be named plainly rather than softened into nothing.

And here is why the naming helps rather than condemns. A thing with a name is a thing that can be dealt with. What has been sitting on you all day is unnamed, which is why it has been able to swell.

You have a thing that Scripture already has words for, and the naming of it has never once been the same as being condemned by it. It is written in Proverbs 12:18 that the sword tongue and the healing tongue are both real, and the Spirit of God is the one who names something so it can stop growing in the dark.

The second half is the load-bearing half

Now, the verse does not stop at the sword, and almost everybody quotes only the first part.

But the tongue of the wise is health.

Health. Not cleverness, not restraint, not silence. The alternative to a wounding word in that proverb is not saying nothing. It is a word that heals, which means the mouth that did the damage is the same instrument that carries the repair.

That matters enormously today, because the thing you want most is to be a person who did not say it, and that person does not exist. What does exist is a mouth that can say something else.

You have a tongue that can carry health into that room, and it has never been disqualified by what it said this morning. Proverbs 12:18 puts the sword and the health in the same verse and gives them both to the same mouth, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does not retire an instrument over one use of it.

And I want to say this plainly, because it has been the loudest thing in your head since about ten past eight.

That sentence is not a verdict on you. It is not a score, it is not a grade, and it is not the true secret finally coming out about what kind of parent lives here.

It was one sentence, said by a tired person who knows too much about somebody they love, and it can be answered.

You are not the sentence you said, and one accurate cruel line has never once been the whole account of a person. The written word puts the healing tongue in the same breath as the sword in Proverbs 12:18, and the Spirit of God is the one who refuses to let a bad eleven seconds be read as a life.

Say sorry for the sentence and not for yourself

Here is the one thing about the apology, and it is not a technique, it is a distinction.

There is an apology that is really an explanation. It goes: I am sorry I said that, I have had a horrible week, work has been impossible, and you know how I get when I am tired.

Every word of that may be true and it is not an apology. It is a request for understanding, delivered to a person who is currently the injured party, and it asks them to do something for you.

You are carrying the reason and they are not, and the burden of that has never once been theirs to pick up. It is written in Proverbs 12:18 that the wise tongue brings health rather than an account of itself, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps the weight on the person ministering.

The other kind is shorter. I said something to you this morning that was not fair and it was not true. I am sorry I said it.

That is it. No context, no history, no reason. The reason is yours to carry and is genuinely not their business.

Proverbs 12:18 gives the healing to the tongue rather than to the explanation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a short sentence go further than a long one.

You are able to say the short version, and none of it has ever required them to understand your week first. Proverbs 12:18 says the tongue of the wise is health, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in eleven words said at a doorway without a defense attached.

And then let it be finished. Do not raise it again tomorrow to check it took. Do not bring it up in a week to demonstrate that you are still sorry, which is a way of asking to be forgiven twice.

You have permission to let it be over, and finishing it has never once meant you took it lightly. The written word calls the wise tongue health rather than penance in Proverbs 12:18, and the Spirit of God is the one who closes a thing that a person keeps trying to reopen.
