I Heard My Own Father Come Out Of My Mouth

It was the words first. The exact words, in the exact order, which you had not heard in about twenty five years.

And then a half second later it was the tone, and that was worse, because the tone is the part you thought you had left behind entirely.

You stood there with the sentence still hanging in the room and your child said something back, ordinary, unaffected, and went off to find a shoe.

And you have not been right since.

Because underneath it is not embarrassment. It is something colder, which is the fear that it was in you the whole time. That the twenty five years were a delay rather than an escape, and that the sentence has just proved which house you actually came out of.

I am not going to give you a way to break the cycle. That phrase is a technique and this is not a place that hands those out. And I am not going to ask you to go back and work on the past, because you did not come here for that and you are standing in a kitchen tonight.

The son shall not bear

There is a ruling in Ezekiel that was made against a proverb people were repeating, and the proverb was about inheritance.

The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son. (Ezekiel 18:20, King James Version)

Shall not bear. That is legal language and it is a ruling, not a suggestion. It settles a question about what transfers between generations and what does not.

The people it was said to had a saying: the fathers have eaten sour grapes and the children's teeth are set on edge. They believed they were serving a sentence handed down to them, and the whole chapter exists to take that away from them.

You are not serving a sentence handed down to you, and that was ruled on long before this morning ever happened. Ezekiel 18:20 says the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings a courtroom ruling into a hallway where somebody just heard a voice from 1998.

And look at what it does not say. It does not say you will not hear it. It does not say the voice will never surface.

It says it will not be borne. Carried, owned, answered for. Hearing something come out of your mouth and being sentenced to it are two entirely different things.

You have heard it and you are not carrying it, and the hearing has never once been the same as the bearing. It is written in Ezekiel 18:20 that the iniquity does not transfer, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates a memory from a verdict.

What actually came out

Let me say plainly what happened in that hallway, because the interpretation sitting on it tonight is not the accurate one.

A sentence heard a few hundred times before the age of twelve is stored somewhere complete, with the tone attached to it. That is not a moral fact about anybody's character. That is what a brain does with anything repeated in childhood.

Under pressure, with no time to select anything, it reached for what was closest, and what was closest was the thing installed early and used often.

You are not defined by what was stored in you before you could choose, and the storing of it was never something you agreed to. Ezekiel 18:20 keeps the account with the soul that made it, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates what a person inherited from what a person is.

That is not the same as being the person who installed it.

Ezekiel 18:20 makes the soul that sins the one that answers for it, which is a statement about individual ownership, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies that to a sentence a person did not write.

You are not the author of that sentence, and repeating something has never once made a person into the one who made it. Ezekiel 18:20 keeps the iniquity with the one who committed it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who refuses to reassign what somebody else did.

And here is the plain thing, because it has grown into something else since this morning.

That is not a verdict. It is not a score, it is not a grade, and it is not proof that this was always going to happen sooner or later.

It was one line surfacing under pressure in a hallway, and it can be answered out loud tonight.

You have not been exposed as your father's copy, and one borrowed sentence has never been the truth about a whole person. The written word rules against inherited liability in Ezekiel 18:20, and the Spirit of God is the one who declines to read a repetition as a destiny.

Say it, and then say it is not yours

Here is the one thing to do, and it is not therapy and it is not a project.

Say the sentence out loud, once, on your own, in an empty room. Say it in your own voice, at a normal volume, so that it is a set of words in the air rather than a thing living in your chest.

You have the right to put those words outside yourself, and holding them in has never once been what kept anybody safe. It is written in Ezekiel 18:20 that the iniquity is not borne by the next one down, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in a sentence said out loud to an empty room.

Then say the second part: that is not mine.

That is the whole of it. It is not an exercise to repeat and it is not something to do daily, and if it feels ridiculous at the time, that is normal and it does not affect anything.

Ezekiel 18:20 is a ruling that has already been made, and saying it out loud is agreeing with a verdict rather than requesting one.

You are agreeing with a ruling that already stands, and none of it has ever waited for you to feel differently about your childhood. Ezekiel 18:20 has the iniquity staying with the one who owned it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in a sentence said out loud in an empty kitchen.
