Gone QuietLuke 15:20

I Found Out From Somebody Else

This message is for the parent who learned something important about their own child from another adult

Somebody told you at a school thing. Or on a doorstep, or in a message that started with a phrase like I assumed you knew.

And you said, oh yes, in the voice people use, and carried on with the conversation, and drove home with your hands on the wheel doing something odd.

The information itself was probably fine. It might even have been good news. That is not the part that has been sitting on you since Tuesday.

The part is that somebody else had it first. That there is a whole ordering of who gets told in your child's life, and you have just found out where you come in that order, and it was not where you thought.

I am not going to give you a way to make sure you are told next time. That is a technique and this is not a place that hands those out. And I am not going to tell you it does not mean anything, because you clearly felt it, and you have been carrying it for four days.

I Found Out From Somebody Else

He saw him a great way off

There is a moment in a parable that is usually read as being about a son coming home, and I want to read it tonight as being about a father who was watching a road.

And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. (Luke 15:20, King James Version)

When he was yet a great way off, his father saw him.

Nobody told him. There was no message and no advance notice and no neighbor arriving with information. The father saw, at distance, because he had been looking down that road for a long time.

You are a parent who watches a road, and that watching has never once depended on being informed by anybody. Luke 15:20 says when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that into a car where somebody drove home from a school thing on Tuesday.

And notice what the father had, sitting there in the middle of the sentence. Compassion. It arrived before any conversation, before any explanation, before a word was exchanged.

He did not need briefing to feel it. He had been holding the whole situation for however long, without updates, and the compassion was fully formed by the time the distance closed.

You are holding compassion that was never waiting on information, and it has never once needed to be brought up to date. It is written in Luke 15:20 that the father saw and had compassion before anything was said, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a parent's heart current without a briefing.

Not being told first is not the same as not being trusted

Now let me say the thing that will take some weight off, because the conclusion sitting on this is not the only reading of what happened.

The order in which a young person tells things is almost never about trust. It is about risk, and the risk is not the same in every direction.

You are not being kept out, and the sequence of who heard first has never once been a ranking of anybody. Luke 15:20 has the father watching from the house with no messenger sent to him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who reads an order of telling for what it actually is.

Telling a friend costs almost nothing. Telling a teacher costs a little. Telling a parent costs the most, and not because a parent is dangerous. It costs the most because a parent matters most, and that face carries more weight than anybody else's on earth.

So the person who matters most is often told last. That is not a flaw in the relationship. It is a consequence of the size of it.

Luke 15:20 has a father at the end of a long road rather than at the front of a line, and the Holy Spirit is the one who reads a position accurately.

You are the person whose reaction weighs the most, and being told last has never once meant being trusted least. Luke 15:20 puts the father watching from the house rather than being sent word, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells the difference between distance and rejection.

And there is a plain thing to say, because four days is long enough for this to have grown.

That is not a verdict. It is not a score, it is not a grade, and it is not evidence about the parent driving home from that school thing.

It is a young person managing risk in the ordinary way, and the ordering of it says more about weight than about warmth.

You have not been demoted in your own child's life, and the order of who was told has never been the measure of anything. The written word has the father seeing from a distance in Luke 15:20, and the Spirit of God is the one who declines to read an order of telling as a ranking of love.

What to do with what you now know

Here is the practical part, and it is a subtraction rather than an action.

Do not raise it. Not tonight, not casually while the dishes are being done, and not with the phrase somebody mentioned to me, which fools nobody and teaches a lasting lesson about how information travels in your house.

You are able to leave a thing where it lies, and holding it quietly has never once been the same as being shut out of it. Luke 15:20 has a father who says nothing in the whole verse, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a piece of news a parent decides not to spend.

If they tell you themselves in three weeks, receive it as though you had not heard it. That is not dishonesty. It is refusing to make them pay for the fact that somebody else spoke first.

And if they never tell you, that is allowed too, and it costs you nothing that you actually had.

Luke 15:20 has a father who says nothing at all in the whole verse, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes waiting and watching into the whole of a parent's job on a night like this one.

You are able to hold what you know without spending it, and none of it has ever required you to be seen knowing. Luke 15:20 has the father running and embracing before he says a word, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in a piece of news that a parent quietly does not raise.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody tonight.

You are not last in that child's life, and the order in which things get told has never once been a ranking of who matters. Luke 15:20 has a father seeing from the house without a single message being sent, and the Spirit of God is the one carrying that into a kitchen where somebody has been holding this since Tuesday.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have been watching that road the whole time, and the compassion in you was fully formed long before anybody told you anything. It is written, when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a parent's heart ahead of the news rather than behind it.

He saw him. Nobody told him.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Order of who gets told in this house, you are not a league table. Luke 15:20 says when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, so by the Holy Spirit you do not get to rank me, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that I am on the outside of my own child's life, you are answered tonight. The written word has a father seeing from the house with nobody sending him word, and by the Holy Spirit I stop reading an order of telling as a measure of trust.
  3. Father, You saw him a great way off. Your word says You had compassion and ran before a word was spoken, so by Your Spirit I sit in that room tonight and I say nothing about what I found out.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
