I Lost It1 John 1:9

I Apologized And It Did Not Feel Finished

This message is for the parent who said sorry properly to their child and still does not feel forgiven tonight

You did it properly. That is what makes tonight strange.

You went in, you named the thing, you did not explain yourself, you did not make them manage your feelings about it. You said sorry the way people are always telling you to say sorry.

And they said it was fine. They probably meant it. They went off and did something and by the evening they were laughing at something on a screen.

And you are sitting here at nine o'clock with the same weight on your chest that you had at four.

So now there is a second problem sitting on top of the first one, which is the suspicion that you did not really mean it, because surely if you had meant it you would feel different by now.

I am not going to tell you to apologize again. That is the worst possible advice here and it would make things heavier for both of you. And I am not going to tell you to just let it go, because that is not a thing a person can do on request.

I Apologized And It Did Not Feel Finished

Faithful and just

There is a line in John's first letter that puts the whole transaction somewhere other than in your chest.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9, King James Version)

Look at the two words describing God there. Faithful and just.

Not merciful, which is what you would expect. Not kind, not gracious. Faithful, meaning He keeps to what He said, and just, meaning it would be wrong of Him not to.

Forgiveness in that verse is not a mood God gets into. It is an obligation He has taken on Himself, and obligations do not wait for the other party to feel better.

You are forgiven by somebody who is being faithful and just about it, and none of that has ever waited on how you feel at nine in the evening. 1 John 1:9 says he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts a legal word in front of a person waiting for a feeling.

And look at the timing in the sentence. If we confess, he is faithful. Present tense, immediate, no interval described anywhere.

There is no gap in that verse for a waiting period. The confessing and the forgiving are pressed right up against each other, and whatever is happening in your chest at nine o'clock is happening after the fact.

You have already been forgiven, and the delay you are experiencing has never once been happening at God's end of it. It is written in 1 John 1:9 that the forgiving follows the confessing with nothing in between, and the Spirit of God is the one who closes a thing before a person has caught up with it.

The feeling is not the receipt

Now here is the mistake, and almost everybody makes it, and it is not a spiritual failure.

The feeling is being treated as the receipt. As long as the weight is still there, the transaction has not gone through, so a person goes back to check, and checking keeps the thing open, and an open thing generates weight, which then gets read as evidence that it is still open.

That is a loop and it has nothing to do with God.

1 John 1:9 puts the closing in God's hands and the confessing in yours, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates those two so a person is not left auditing their own chest.

You are not required to feel finished for it to be finished, and the weight has never once been the receipt. 1 John 1:9 makes the forgiving an act of faithfulness rather than a change in the atmosphere, and the Holy Spirit is the one who hands over a closed matter to somebody still holding it open.

And there is a plain thing to say here, because tonight it has grown into something about you.

The weight is not a verdict. It is not a score, it is not a grade, and it is not evidence about the kind of parent who does this and does not really care.

It is what a conscience does when it has been running hard for six hours, and it would do it to anybody with a conscience, which is the whole point.

You have not been proved to be careless, and a heavy evening after an apology has never been a report on the person having it. The written word cleanses from all unrighteousness in 1 John 1:9 without asking for a mood to confirm it, and the Spirit of God is the one who refuses to read a heavy chest as a character.

Cleanse us from all unrighteousness

There is a second half to the verse that gets read as decoration and it is not.

And to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Two things are named there, not one. Forgiven is about the record. Cleansed is about the residue. The verse knows perfectly well that a person can be pardoned and still feel dirty, and it addresses both.

You have both halves of that verse, and the second one was never an afterthought bolted on to the first. 1 John 1:9 names the forgiving and the cleansing in one sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the quiet second half in somebody who only knew to ask for the first.

So the thing sitting on your chest is not something the verse forgot about. It is the second item on its list.

1 John 1:9 handles the residue as well as the record, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the second part in a person who is only aware of needing the first.

You are cleansed as well as forgiven, and that second part was never left for you to do to yourself. 1 John 1:9 says he is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse from all unrighteousness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who works on the residue while somebody sits at a kitchen table at nine.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody tonight.

You are not waiting for a forgiveness that has not arrived, and the heaviness of this evening was never the thing holding it up. 1 John 1:9 calls God faithful and just rather than merely willing, and the Spirit of God is the one carrying that into a kitchen where somebody has been checking their own chest since four o'clock.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have been forgiven and cleansed, and both of those were finished while the sentence was still coming out of your mouth. It is written, if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who closes an account that a person keeps reopening to check.

Faithful. Just. Already done.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Weight that stayed on my chest after the apology, you are not a receipt. 1 John 1:9 says he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, so by the Holy Spirit you do not get to tell me whether this is finished, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that I did not really mean it, you are answered tonight. The written word presses the forgiving right up against the confessing with no waiting period in between, and by the Holy Spirit I stop auditing my own chest for evidence.
  3. Father, You are faithful and just. Your word says You forgive and cleanse from all unrighteousness, so by Your Spirit I say out loud tonight that it is finished, and I do not apologize for it again.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
