Everybody Else Got The Instructions

There is a book. Everybody else got a copy.

You know that is not true. You are not making a claim about the world. But it is what the feeling insists on, and the feeling has been fairly consistent for about nine years now.

It comes up at parties. Somebody says a sentence about their child, casually, the way people mention the weather, and the sentence contains four assumptions you did not know existed, and you nod.

It comes up in a waiting room, where another parent handles a small crisis in a way that is so obviously right that you feel a hot thing in your chest.

And it comes up at eleven at night when you go back over something and think, there must be a way of doing this that people know.

I am not going to write you the manual. That is a standard and this site does not hand those out, and the whole ache tonight is the existence of a manual, so producing one would be the least helpful thing available.

Giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not

There is a verse in James about asking for wisdom, and the middle of it is the part almost nobody quotes.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. (James 1:5, King James Version)

Upbraideth not. Upbraid is an old word for scolding somebody, and specifically for scolding them about the very thing they have come to ask about.

So the verse anticipates the fear precisely. The fear is not that God cannot help. The fear is that asking will reveal something, that the asking itself will be the evidence, and that somewhere in the response there will be a note about how a person your age ought to know this by now.

You are able to ask without it being held against you, and there has never once been a note attached to the answer. James 1:5 says God giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that into a kitchen where somebody has been quietly not asking anybody anything for nine years.

And the word before it. Liberally.

Not carefully. Not proportionally. Not in the amount that matches how well you have done so far. Liberally means without measuring, which is the opposite of every arrangement you have ever been in.

You are dealt with liberally rather than proportionally, and the supply has never once been sized to your record. It is written in James 1:5 that God giveth to all men liberally, and the Spirit of God is the one who does not weigh out an answer against a person's history.

The manual does not exist, and here is the evidence

Now let me say why the book is not real, because you know it intellectually and it has not reached the place where the feeling lives.

The people who sound certain at parties are describing what worked for their child. That is not the same as knowing what works. It is a sample of one, held with confidence, which is how most human certainty is produced.

And the ones who genuinely have read everything are frequently the most anxious people in the room, because reading everything produces a wider range of ways to be wrong rather than a narrower one.

James 1:5 tells people to ask God for wisdom rather than to acquire a body of knowledge, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies for the specific child in front of a person rather than for children in general.

You are given wisdom for this child rather than for children, and no book has ever once contained that. James 1:5 sends a person to ask rather than to study, and the Holy Spirit is the one who answers in a house rather than in a chapter.

And here is the plain thing, because nine years of this has become something about you.

That is not a verdict. It is not a score, it is not a grade, and it is not evidence about the parent standing at that counter.

It is a person comparing their own inside to everybody else's outside, which is the oldest and most reliable way to lose an evening.

You have not missed something everybody else received, and the certainty in other people has never once been a copy of a book. The written word sends everybody to the same place to ask in James 1:5, and the Spirit of God is the one who declines to certify a manual that was never printed.

What asking actually looks like

One practical thing, and it is not a technique because there is nothing to do with it afterwards.

Asking God for wisdom about a child is not a formal event. It does not need a posture and it does not need a quiet room, both of which you do not have.

It looks like a sentence said in a car. What does this one need. Or: I do not know what to do about Thursday. Or just the child's name and then nothing, which is a real prayer and counts entirely.

You are already praying when you say a name in a car, and it has never once needed to be tidier than that to be heard. It is written in James 1:5 that the asking is met liberally and without a scolding, and the Spirit of God is the one who receives eleven words at a traffic light as prayer.

And then the answer does not usually arrive as a plan. It arrives as a nudge in a doorway three days later, or as a thing you say without having decided to say it, and you often only recognize it afterwards.

James 1:5 promises the giving without describing the delivery, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies in the middle of an ordinary week rather than in a scheduled meeting.

You are able to ask in a car in eleven words, and none of it has ever required a quiet room you do not have. James 1:5 puts no conditions on the asking at all, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in a sentence said at a traffic light.
