I Say The Same Three Sentences At The Door

This message is for the parent who says the same three sentences at the door every morning and gets nothing back

Have you got everything. Have a good day. I love you.

Or some version. The words are yours, and there are three or four of them, and they have been the same for a very long time.

And what comes back is a sound. Not a sentence. A sound that means yes or means nothing, made on the way through a door that is already half closed.

You are not owed a response. You know that, and you would be embarrassed to say out loud that you want one, because it sounds like a person asking a child for reassurance and that is not what this is.

But somewhere in the fourth or fifth year of it, a thought arrived. The thought that you are saying words into a hallway. That the three sentences leave your mouth and land on a floor and get swept up with everything else, and that you might as well be reading them off a card.

I am not going to give you better sentences. There is no wording that makes a fifteen year old turn round at a door, and if I handed you one you would be performing it by Wednesday and you would hear yourself doing it.

I Say The Same Three Sentences At The Door

The verse names the doorway and never names a method

There is a line in Deuteronomy that gets used to sell a great many programs, and I want to read it as what it actually is.

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. (Deuteronomy 6:7, King James Version)

Look at the list. Sitting in the house. Walking by the way. Lying down. Rising up.

That is not a curriculum. There is no hour named, no order, no method, no material. It is a list of the four dullest categories of a human day, and the instruction is only that words happen in them.

You are already living inside the shape this verse describes, and none of it has ever required a program to be running. Deuteronomy 6:7 names the doorway and the road and the getting up, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies that to three worn sentences said at seven forty.

And here is the part that matters for a person standing in a hallway. The verse says nothing whatsoever about a response.

It does not say and thy children shall answer thee. It does not say and they shall look up. The whole weight of it sits on the talking, and the receiving end is not described at all.

You have been doing the thing the verse actually asks for, and the silence coming back has never once meant it failed. It is written in Deuteronomy 6:7 that the talking happens in the walking and the rising up, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that a comfort rather than a heavier list.

Words do not land where they are said

Now I want to say something about how words work in a house, because the timing of it is easy to get wrong and I had it wrong for years.

A sentence said at a door does not land at the door. It lands eleven years later in a parking lot in another state when somebody is deciding something and hears your voice.

That is not a nice idea. That is how memory works in a person, and every adult reading this could name a sentence one of their own parents said, in an ordinary voice, in a hallway, that they have never once forgotten.

Ask somebody sometime. They will not name the big talk. Nobody names the big talk. They name a throwaway line said while a coat was being found.

You have been given the exact hour where words go deepest, and it has never once been the hour that felt important. Deuteronomy 6:7 names the walking and the rising up and skips the ceremony entirely, and the Holy Spirit is the one who chose a hallway over a lecture.

Deuteronomy 6:7 puts the words in the doorway on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a sentence from a hallway into a life somebody has not started living yet.

You are putting something into the ground every morning, and none of it has come back void because a face did not look up. Deuteronomy 6:7 has the talking done in the walking and the rising, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the keeping between now and whenever it surfaces.

The three sentences are also doing a second job you did not design. They are the sound of the house being the same as it was yesterday.

A child who hears the same three sentences at the same door for eleven years is being told something underneath the words, every single morning, and it is not the content. It is that the world has not changed overnight.

You have been holding something steady with those sentences, and the sameness of them has always been the point rather than the failure. The written word puts the talking in the rising up in Deuteronomy 6:7, and the Spirit of God is the one who is in a repeated sentence long after the words stop being heard as words.

The thought that they are not landing

Let me deal with the thought itself, because it turns up around year four and it does not leave on its own.

It is not a true report. It arrives dressed as realism, in the voice of somebody who has finally faced facts, and what it actually is is a conclusion drawn from the only evidence available at the door, which is a grunt.

You cannot see a sentence land. Nobody can. There is no receipt for a word said in a hallway, and the absence of a receipt is not the absence of a landing.

That is not a verdict on you and it is not a score. It is what happens when a person judges an eleven year process by the four seconds of it they can see.

You are not speaking into an empty hallway, and there has never been a morning of it that fell on nothing. Deuteronomy 6:7 assigns the talking without assigning a result to watch for, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds the other end of every sentence said at that door.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody today.

You are not talking to a closed door, and the grunt on the way out has never once been the measure of what happened. Deuteronomy 6:7 puts the talking in the walking and the rising up and says nothing at all about an answer, and the Spirit of God is the one carrying that into a hallway at seven forty tomorrow.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have been sowing every single morning, and the harvest of it was never scheduled to arrive at the door. It is written that the words belong in the sitting and the walking and the rising up, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps them until the year they are needed.

Say them again tomorrow. Same three. Same door.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Thought that my words fall on a floor, you are dismissed this morning. Deuteronomy 6:7 puts the talking in the rising up and never once asks for an answer, so by the Holy Spirit you do not get the doorway tomorrow, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that nothing I say is landing, you are answered. The written word assigns the sentences and leaves the receiving to God, and by the Holy Spirit I stop reading a grunt as a report on eleven years.
  3. Father, You put the words in the walking and the rising up. Your word says the talking belongs in the ordinary hours, so by Your Spirit I say the same three sentences tomorrow and turn away first.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
